English as a Second Language

Central Middle School is very lucky to offer an extensive ESL program for our English Language Learners. Student are offered specialized English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction for up to 5 blocks a day based on their individual levels of English.

An English Language Learner (ELL) is evaluated carefully by teachers using the Alberta ESL Benchmarks and Limited Schooling Benchmarks. This ESL Benchmarking system allows us to regularly assess and evaluate the progress of each student. These records show the students’ progress over time while highlighting areas they may need more instruction.

By offering ELL students the opportunity to attend specialized ESL classes, Central Middle School is not only giving these students an optimal opportunity to better their English, but also avoiding sending students to classes that would be too difficult for them to manage and find success.

Our specialized ESL teacher at Central is Melissa Lopes. She has over 10 years of teaching experience around the world and first hand experience learning a second language overseas. She believes in teaching English through comprehensible input to develop students skills and abilities to become confident English speakers, listeners, readers and writers.
